Portrait of the Algorithm as a Young Ken
Portrait of the Algorithm as a Young Ken (2023), a human/AI collaboration, explores the limitations of disciplinary silos in academia, especially within the arts where areas like painting, printmaking, and photography are typically isolated from one another. While silos can sharpen an artist’s focus, they can also lead to repetitive work that fetishizes technical aspects of a medium over the ideas, ignoring the world outside.
The mass-produced, articulated plastic dolls in this series represent the formally educated, siloed artist and AI, each programmed to operate within certain parameters. When prompted to experiment, however, each “machine” is capable of growth and learning, and produces unexpected results. Images generated with DALLE-3.
